Transportation security screeners are employed by the federal government and work in air, sea, and rail terminals as well as other transportation facilities. The majority of gaming surveillance officers’ work takes place in casino observation rooms, where they use audio and video equipment. Most security guards spend a lot of time on their feet, either patrolling buildings or grounds or assigned to a specific post. Some people work behind a counter or in a guardhouse at the entrance to a guarded institution for long periods of time. Some security guards work eight-hour or longer shifts with rotating schedules to provide round-the-clock surveillance. During the day, guards may have a lot of contact with other employees and the general public.
The work can be regular, but it can also be dangerous, especially if there is a confrontation. Throughout their shift, guards must remain vigilant, looking for anything out of the ordinary. Guards may request police, fire, or ambulance assistance in the event of an emergency. It’s possible that some security guards are armed.
